Tight Jeans

'Tight Jeans' (2008) directed by Destiny Ekharaga

Three black teenagers are becoming frustrated while waiting for their friend. A young white lad walks past wearing super tight jeans. The boys look on until one of them asks the pivotal question, "How can a man wear jeans that tight?" This sparks a hilarious debate about race and culture.

The film opens on a busy street in London, establishing the set location. The camera then approaches three black teenage boys sitting on a wall waiting for someone. After seeing a guy walk past in extremely tight jeans, they start the hilarious debate on random topics - particularly focusing on penis size. The director particularly wanted to embody the humour of black teenagers, particularly boys, becoming disheartened by the way that the media and film represent them and often portray them as criminals.

The personal impact of this film is great and I feel inspired for my coursework to perhaps do some form of social or political commentary, as Ekharaga has used her platform to do so.

The opening shot is a wide shot of a busy street, with music backing the scene. The long take of the boys adds to the realism of the scene, as this film was inspired by real-life conversations the director had overhead or partaken in.
